Gemma's Study Tips!

I recently started studying for my dental nursing diploma in the Dublin Dental University Hospital.  I decided to do a blog about my top tips for busy college students. Many college students may also be working full time and have many more obligations that make it difficult juggling work and study. To successfully manage your college work here are some handy tips:

1 – Always be prepared;

Always be prepared for tomorrow! Prepare all of your notes for the following day, pack your bag the night before with your change of clothes, extra lunches for a quick bite to eat before college, always have coins for the bus/cark parking, have your pens and any necessary stationary for the day ahead and always bring a bottle of water. You will be able to make the most efficient use of your time, with no stress and more of a clear head to go home and read over your notes that evening!

2 – Establish a routine;

Set a specific time for you college work! This will help you stay on top of assignments. Make sure people around you know and understand when you are studying so they can allow you to focus on earning your college degree without distractions.

3 – Find a quiet place to study;

Separate yourself from any distractions, find a quiet room for yourself so you can focus on your college work. If you need to – find an alternative location such as a library or a small coffee shop so that you can give your college work your undivided attention!

4 – Maintain a college calendar;

In college you will have exams, assignments and practical exams. Keep a calendar of everything coming up and highlight your exams in a different colour. Using a calendar will help you to stay focused and not to fall behind on assignments, study etc.

5 – Stay organized;

Organization is key and is something that many college students struggle with. Organize your materials and assignments by using folders both on your computer and for any printed materials.  This way you can best utilize your study time by avoiding a long search for your documents.

6 – Stay positive;

College work can be overwhelming along with working full time, learning an activity pushes us beyond our comfort zone. It can be frustrating at times – stay positive and do your best and remember why earning your degree is worth all the hard work!

7 – Take a break;

Remember when something is overwhelming and difficult it is ok to take a break! When studying for a big exam and something proves difficult, step away from your computer to take a walk or get some fresh air to clear your head; this will allow you to come back refocused.

9 - Stay well-rested;

There’s a lot to be said about a good night’s sleep. Make sure you are well rested so that you can be fully focused during your exams.

10 – Don’t be afraid to ask for help;

Don't be afraid to reach out to tutors, colleagues and classmates if you are finding something difficult or that you're falling behind. Whether you have trouble understanding a new concept or just need help managing your time, there are plenty people who know exactly what you're going through and are there to help!

“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do. “
