Oral Surgery

Oral surgery is the area of dentistry that deals with the skilled changing of the anatomy of the mouth. It's probably the oldest area of dentistry. Since the dawn of time, people have needed to have troublesome teeth removed.

Our Oral Surgeon is Dr Marie O Neill

In modern times, oral surgery has become more sophisticated and painless. It now covers a variety of procedures like:

Symptomatic Wisdom Teeth

Not all wisdom teeth (third molars) require removal, but if they start causing trouble, such as pain, overcrowding, or disease, removing them can resolve symptoms. We will evaluate wisdom teeth as your child’s adult teeth emerge to ensure they will not derail otherwise good oral health.

Dental Implant Placement

Dental implants replace missing teeth, including the root, for a stable and long-term solution to tooth loss. Many patients choose dental implants because they help retain bone quality and function like a natural tooth.

Bone Grafting

Gum disease and tooth loss often lead to bone loss. Bone grafting and reshaping are particularly practical for patients seeking dental implants.

Exposing Unerupted (Buried) Teeth

Sometimes teeth fail to emerge from the gums when planned. A little assistance from an oral surgeon can help the process of healthy growth along.

Tissue Biopsies

Irregular skin lesions within the mouth and throat may require closer inspection to rule out oral cancer. Oral surgeons are highly skilled in diagnosis cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions.

As with most types of cancer, early treatment dramatically improves the patient’s prognosis. Your dentist or orthodontist is often the first to notice changes to your oral health.

In Swords Orthodontics, our Oral Surgeon is Dr Marie O'Neill, who has a specialist registration with the Dental Council. She has particular expertise in managing pain after surgery and avoiding it happening in the first place through her advanced knowledge of anaesthetics.

We welcome you to get in touch to arrange a booking for a full evaluation.

Princess Diana and Me

What does Stephen Murray and Princess Diana have in common?

Yesterday I blogged about Princess Diana and The Crown and on the one occasion that she came to visit the place where I worked we didn't stop to go and look at her, but I forgot one piece of trivia.

And I don't mean that the percussionist on Song for Guy was also occasionally the drummer for The Wombles.*

So what does Stephen Murray, principal orthodontist at Swords Orthodontics have in common with Diana Princess of Wales?

I might leave the question hang there for a few days and offer a prize to someone who gets it right.

More anon, but till then, watch ...

Specialist Oral Surgeon Dr Marie O'Neill joins Swords Orthodontics

Dr Marie O'Neill joins Swords Orthodontics as our new specialist oral surgeon

This was a great development for the practice, and for the local area in general - we expanded our specialist dental services by adding an oral surgeon to our team here.

Dr Marie O'Neill qualified with an Honours degree in Dentistry, and then consolidated her enthusiasm for oral surgery by completing the specialist training programme in Trinity College Dublin. She is now on the Dental Council's relatively exclusive list (they call it "The Register") of specialist oral surgeons.

An oral surgeon is ...
