Michelle: Now, that’s your braces all off. Does it feel different?

Patient: Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. It feels so weird. That’s so weird, that’s so weird. Oh my God.

Michelle: I’ll show you your teeth now, here’s a mirror.

Patient: Oh my God, they’re so straight. They’re straight, they’re amazing, that’s amazing. Ah. May. Zing. Oh my God, thank you , thank you, that’s amazing. Thank you. Do you have a picture of what they used to look like at the start?

Michelle: Yes, here’s a picture of what your teeth looked like at the beginning.

Patient: Oh my God, I can’t believe they were so bad. Are those my teeth?

Michelle: Yes, that’s you at the start.

Patient: Are those really my teeth?

Michelle: Yes, that was your teeth at the start.

Patient: Really my teeth?

Michelle: Yes really your teeth.

Patient: Oh my God you are wizards. Wizards the lot of you. Thank you so much. Wizards, wizards, I’m telling you. You’re wizards. Thank you so much.

Michelle: You’re welcome

Stephen: You’re welcome, thanks.

Patient: You’re all wizards, thanks, thanks. Wizards.

Stephen: I’ll wear my Hogwarts’ scarf in tomorrow.

Patient: You better have gone to Hufflepuff.

Didn't know she didn't smile

Had a young patient in for the first time last week, accompanied by her mum. They both knew what needed fixed - a top tooth biting inside the lower teeth instead of outside them: a crossbite.

I went through my usual orthodontic assessment for a new patient, measuring this and that, but I also asked “would your teeth stop you smiling for a photo?”

“Yes.”

I could see her mum’s face change tone, and she said “you never said that, you never told me you didn’t smile.”

It was something like a scene from Derry Girls or The Inbetweeners, but last week we actually had a teenage patient phone the practice pretending to be his own father to cancel the appointment he was meant to attend that day.

Why retainers are important

I had a patient come in this afternoon for an appointment that was marked in the diary as “retainer review”.

When I opened up his notes, it turned out that his orthodontic treatment finished over 3 years ago and we hadn’t seen him in almost 3 years. At that stage we had made him a spare retainer and he never came back to us to have it fitted.

When he came in, I said “so we haven’t seen you in nearly 3 years.”
