Planning for the Christmas Holidays When You Have Braces

Christmas is a time for festive food, family gatherings and plenty of celebrations! If you’re wearing braces, a little extra planning can help you enjoy the holidays while keeping your teeth and orthodontic treatment on track.

Be mindful of festive foods

Christmas treats can be tempting, but hard, sticky and chewy foods can damage your braces. Avoid toffee, caramel, popcorn, hard nuts and boiled sweets. Instead, enjoy braces-friendly options such as soft chocolates, mince pies without hard toppings, soft desserts and cooked vegetables. Remember to cut harder foods, such as apples, into small pieces.

Keep up your oral hygiene routine

With all the excitement of Christmas, it’s easy to forget your usual routine. Brush carefully after meals, use interdental brushes to clean around brackets and wires, and floss daily. Keeping your teeth clean helps prevent plaque build-up and keeps your smile healthy.

Pack an orthodontic care kit

Whether you’re visiting family or travelling over the holidays, bring your toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, interdental brushes, orthodontic wax and a small mirror. Having these essentials with you makes it easier to manage your braces wherever you go.

Plan ahead for your orthodontic appointments

Check your appointment schedule before the holiday period, especially if you need an adjustment. If you experience a broken bracket or a poking wire while your orthodontist is closed, contact your practice for advice and follow their emergency instructions.

Enjoy Christmas with confidence

Having braces doesn’t mean missing out on the festive fun! With a little preparation, sensible food choices and good oral hygiene, you can enjoy the Christmas holidays and keep working towards your perfect smile.

From all of us, we wish you a happy, healthy Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

Hard, sticky and chewy sweets are especially tricky as they can break a bracket or cause a wire to poke out which results in a trip to your orthodontist.

Luckily, there are still plenty of Halloween treats you can still enjoy such as chocolate and crisps. Taking extra care …

What's Dracula's IOTN? Scary Teeth in fiction and the facts behind them

So, it's Halloween soon, and I thought I would do a little blog about scary teeth.

I'm going to focus on teeth that have some kind of connection to real life, rather than total monster teeth, because monster teeth could cover any kind of stretch of the imagination, and since I love to ramble on about teeth we could be here all day. I mean, that monster in the Predator movies, I think it's the Yautja, or Hish-qu-Ten or some sort of name like that, has a very interesting kind of dental setup where the jaw moves sideways as well as up and down when …
