Did you ever meet Glen Hansard?

I was sad to hear about Glen Hansard’s death a couple of weeks ago. I saw The Frames a surprising number of times for someone who never went to see The Frames. They seemed to be on so many bills that I found myself at but I wasn’t really a fan, largely pledging my early 90s Irish band fan energy to Something Happens, hoping that their third album would finally make them massive and everyone would acknowledge how cool my vintage Happens T-shirt was.

On the other hand, a friend of mine was a massive fan and she was in tears at the news, and not long after it was clear that he was out playing music , enjoying his vocation just a few hours before his accident. All ended suddenly, the indifference of fate can only seem cruel to the rest of us.

It made me think about the uncertainty of life, even for people in the full of their health. The importance of a life with a minimum of regrets and the general wisdom has it you’ll regret not doing things you should have more often than regretting doing things you shouldn’t have. I’m not entirely sure about that, but I do have a bit of a bit of regret related to Glen Hansard.

I never met him, but I did stand beside him once at a Phil Lynott memorial concert. January 4th, 1992. I’m not sure if I could have named any Frames songs, but I knew he was the guy from the Commitments that had his own band called The Frames. At the time, I was wondering should I speak to him or just let him enjoy the show as a punter like myself.

I left him to it.

In someways, the more respectful of his personal time off duty. What would I have said anyway? I’d probably have wished him luck with his band but I doubt they needed my best wishes to get them over the edge.

Good News, Bad News

It was a bit of a Good News, Bad News appointment.

I was fitting the replacement brace for the guy that lost his brace while out for a walk. This was half of a brace system called a “twin block” where there is one brace on the top jaw and one on the lower. He’d lost the lower one and we had a replacement made. I had asked him to continue to wear the upper brace in the meantime. When he came in, his mum said

“well we have a bit of news with the upper brace. Show Stephen the brace…”

The patient duly takes out the ...

Your call is important to us....

...please hold until it ceases to be important to you.

I had reason to call my new broadband provider yesterday. I was looking through my bank statement and there was a direct debit for far more than I expected.  I checked the previous month – same. Some mistake? Maybe I was mistaken so I got out the contract and looked for small print or hidden costs to my introductory offer. Nope, there was supposed to be 12 months of reduced fees and it was supposed to start 2 months ago.

There was nothing for it but to call them. That meant looking up online to find an ...

Scene and Heard Productions: Up The Déise

Nothing really to do with orthodontics for today’s post, just an out of the blue mention for an organisation that might be of interest to you.

It popped out of the blue when it came to my attention – as an orthodontic practice in Ireland, Swords Ortho has to comply with a wide variety of regulations (employment law, infection control, dental certification, fire safety compliance, general health and safety, waste management, X-ray equipment compliance, disability access, continuing professional development and so on).

To help us stay on top of things, we have a small army of advisors and contractors who come and go behind the scenes ...
