What Is Invisalign?
Maybe you’ve heard about clear braces or invisible braces. While the term sounds like something straight out of science fiction, it’s real and it’s here at Swords Orthodontics. It’s probably made the biggest impact of any development in orthodontics in the last 20 years.
Invisalign is a system that uses clear plastic sleeve-like aligners worn over the teeth. Each one of these aligners is specially made to fit your teeth only and to move your teeth into the correct position according to the treatment plan that Dr Murray will create on a computer.
A series of these Invisalign aligners is created just for you, and each one moves your teeth further from where they are now and closer to where you want them to be. You’ll start out wearing one aligner and then you’ll switch to the next one in the series at the prescribed time. As your treatment continues, all you have to do is wear and change your aligners as directed. You remove your aligners to eat and to clean them, but otherwise they remain on your teeth. The aligners are thin and clear, making them virtually invisible.
The Benefits of Invisalign
Invisalign is a major advancement in orthodontic technology. This isn’t the exclusive realm of models and movie stars; it’s available for both adults and teenagers. At Swords Orthodontics, we mainly have adults enquiring about Invisalign – people like teachers and lawyers, or people working in management, administration, and customer services – real people in everyday jobs where they come into regular face-to-face contact with other people and would feel self-conscious with regular braces.
Apart from the appearance of the Invisalign system compared to regular braces, here are just a few other reasons why our patients love Invisalign:
- As much as they love visiting us at the practice, Invisalign plans tend to be shorter and they appreciate fewer checkups overall
- They really love the convenience (and comfort) of never having wires to tighten
- They like being free to eat anything they want as long as they clean their teeth before replacing their aligner
- They enjoy being able to brush and floss their teeth normally without brackets and wires getting in the way
- They love that they can go about their day without anybody knowing that they are wearing braces!
Can I Use Invisalign? Is Invisalign Right for Me?
Many of the patients we see are suitable for Invisalign, but not everybody is since there are limits to the variety and extent of the problems it can reliably fix. Invisalign can treat crooked, spaced, twisted, and overlapping teeth and can also treat some bite alignment issues. More serious conditions may require traditional braces to fix, however.
At your appointment, Dr Murray will examine your teeth and discuss your needs and your goals with you to help make a determination as to whether treatment with Invisalign is appropriate for you.
Why Choose Swords Orthodontics for Invisalign Treatment?
Even though you can hardly see it, even though it’s easy to wear, even though it’s built by robots from a computer design, Invisalign is an orthodontic appliance intended to move teeth to a better position to give you a great smile. It’s a new way of doing orthodontics, designed to be as patient-friendly as possible, but it’s certainly orthodontics that it’s doing, and that’s why we think you’d prefer an orthodontic specialist to be diagnosing, planning, directing, and carrying out your treatment and reviewing your progress.
Over the years, Dr Murray has accumulated a variety of skills, techniques and equipment ranging from digital X-ray machines to some of the most reliable dental materials ever made to help get the most out of the Invisalign process. He can also decide when it’s not suitable for you, adapt the treatment if you aren’t happy with the outcome, and offer you an effective alternative.
We're also part of the Invisible Ortho Specialists Ireland group - the nationwide alliance of specialist orthodontists who provide Invisalign treatment. This means we're tapped into a network of experienced clinicians across the country so we have high quality continued education with Invisalign treatment and support on treatment planning and sorting out problems.
Caring for Invisalign
As mentioned, you remove your Invisalign aligners to brush and floss your teeth. At this time, you will also clean your aligners. A kit is available to clean your aligners, or you can simply clean them using a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water (never use hot water to rinse or clean your aligners since this could cause their shape to change).
Along with practically every other dentist, Swords Orthodontics tells you to avoid sugary or fizzy drinks – and this is especially true when you have Invisalign aligners on the teeth that might keep the sugary, acidic liquid of these drinks close to the teeth for much longer than normal (not good).
After you eat, you should always brush your teeth before you replace your aligners. Not doing so can cause bacteria and plaque to stick your teeth and the aligner.
If you play sports and wear a mouth guard, you can remove your aligner to use the guard. When you’re done, just replace the aligner.
