Keith Flint

A few weeks ago, I posted a blog about suicide in the dental profession and at lunchtime today, I heard that Keith Flint of The Prodigy had taken his own life.

Keith Flint of the Prodigy
Keith Flint of The Prodigy in 2019

I think it's safe to say that I wasn't a fan of The Prodigy, but I'd seen them live 3 times and it was the last show, about 6 months ago, that their magic finally clicked with me. Keith Flint was a true star. I know that no one is likely to be comparing him to Bob Dylan or Paul McCartney, but for his ...

Progressions of Power: European Orthodontic Congress, the OSI and more from Operation:Mindcrime

Recently I posted about Geoff Tate touring last year on the 30th anniversary of Operation:Mindcrime, the landmark album he made with Queensrÿche. He’s still touring and was back in Dublin, just over 12 months since starting his tour here last January. It was just after the announcement that the Orthodontic Society of Ireland (OSI) was successful in its bid to have Dublin host the European Orthodontic Congress in 2025. There were a few connections running through my mind.

Geoff Tate and Operation Mindcrime Dublin 2019

Operation:Mindcrime was released about 30 years ago – its older than the  OSI!

That said, as a distinct specialty within ...

The Smiles of 2018

I am an android sort of guy.

I do own an iPod. It's apparently an iPod Classic, but when I got it, it was just called an iPod.

I love my iPod. But it isn't as good as the Creative Zen MP3 player it replaced.

But that's it for me and Apple for the time being.

I am an android sort of guy. I presume some of you are too

So imagine my surprise and concern when Google sends me a video called Smiles of 2018 and wants to know if I want to save it.

Smiles of 2018  is a compilation of the in-focus pictures I took on my phone that involve people smiling. I'm a dentist, ...

This ain't rock and roll, this is orthodontic retention....!

Guitar player Gerry Leonard from Clontarf rocks at the Dublin Bowie Festival

Dublin is in the grip of the 2019 David Bowie Festival. Probably Ireland’s biggest annual event coordinated around the cultural effect of one person. Lectures, books, movies, science, photography, cabaret, improvisational comedy, even a children’s art competition, and obviously music, music, music.

Gerry Leonard
"Can Gerry Rock?" was the essential question when Clontarf guitarist Gerry Leonard was asked to join David Bowie's touring band.

I was never a huge David Bowie fan, but he’s always been there. I’m old enough to remember him in the charts – “Boys Keep Swinging” being the first time. Not understanding the possible connotations of this title, I made up ...

Dentist, Dentist....Please!

Lessons from a Michael Schenker concert - nothing to do with teeth (but then again....)

Probably the most famous V guitar in rock,
the Dean Guitars variation on his Harlequin Gibson Flying V

I can't adequately explain how talented this man is. His music has sustained me through O Levels, A Levels, Dentistry and Orthodontics degrees. I saw him first in Ulster Hall in 1986 and most recently last week. It was glorious.

His career is nearly half a century long at this stage, and he's certainly one of the most melodic heavy rock guitarists ever. In another world, Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett would ...

A Dozen Dos and Don'ts - 12 Tips for successful orthodontic retainer wear

12 Do's and Don'ts for successful retainer wear

Here are 12 Tips for Orthodontic Retainer Success (plus a bonus tip, so it's  not just bakers that have 13 in a dozen)

1

DO wear your retainers as your orthodontist directs.

The rest of what follows is what we tell our own patients. At Swords Orthodontics, for most removable retainers, I advise full time wear for the first 3 days and then it’s night time wear after that.

For Ever.

Really.

If you still want straight teeth in 10 years’ time, you’re still wearing a retainer in 10 years’ time.

2

DON’T have your retainer anywhere other than one of these two places:

  1. Your Mouth
  2. Your Retainer Box

Anywhere else and it’s likely to get lost, broken, damaged, stolen, eaten ...
