Famous Belgians and the Rock Stars of Orthodontics

I'm in the departure lounge at Dublin airport, headed out to the Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists. It's probably the biggest gathering of orthodontists in the world.

We'll be listening to speakers talking about their most up to date research, looking at new products made by companies from all over the world to do the best work for our patients, and finding out what will be shaping the future of orthodontics.

Two seats away from me is a Belgian orthodontic professor Hugo de Clerck. He's probably the world expert on using small metal plates attached the jawbone under the gum to treat really difficult orthodontic problems. I have been ...

Operation Mindcrime: Dublin Calling!

About thirty years ago, as dental student, my friend Terry introduced me to Operation:Mindcrime by Queensrÿche. It was the great heavy rock concept album of the 80s, and as well as the record (CD as well as vinyl back then!) there was a full length film to go along with it (on VHS of course) and the guys (not dental students) in my house watched it on a constant loop in between Neighbours and sleeping.

It’s a bit tenuous but the initial dental connection (there almost always is one) here is that one of the ...

Dental Photography in Dublin: The Cameras of Swords Orthodontics Part 2

Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ 70

This is the third Lumix DMC TZ (the TZ stands for Travel Zoom) that we’ve had in the practice. Although not an obvious choice for dental photography, its predecessor was very handy when we needed to shoot video and we didn’t have an SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera with video. It’s also handy for blogging situations like events when the camera on a phone isn’t suitable.

The later models have a feature macro zoom which enables a limited capacity for dental photography but the flash is built into the body of the camera and not ideal for illuminating both sides of the mouth at the same time ...

Dental Photography in Dublin: The Cameras of Swords Orthodontics Part 1

CANON EOS 450D

The first digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera I bought, and still the one Michelle or I pick up every day at Swords Ortho to take intra-oral and extra-oral photos of a new patient or someone we’ve just finished ortho treatment for.

Dozens of photos.

Every day.

Every week.

Every month.

Every year.

Since 2010.

Remarkable service. It’s outlasted the lens I bought with it.

You can’t buy this new.

The camera I bought to replace it in emergencies is still in the cupboard, waiting for the emergency to happen. It’s not unused (it’s our main camera for high quality video) but it’s also no longer in production by CANON and - you guessed it – it’s ...

5 In A Row - Is It Possible?

Swords Orthodontics has a few connections to Gaelic Football - we support Fingallians and Clann Mhuire, and make plenty of mouthguards for our patients (Stephen Murray thinks that the GAA policy on mouthguard wear was one of the great national dental health measures in history). But specialist orthodontist Donnchadh O Morain is our man in the arena, out every week training and playing and here's his analysis of what's coming up.

This weekend marked the return of the Allianz Football League with Dublin hoping to continue with their winning run and retain the New Ireland ...

Probably not Ireland's Favourite Christmas Songs, just mine

After revealing the results of Ireland's Favourite Christmas Song using the statistically unreliable sample of Swords Orthodontics patients and parents, I thought I'd follow up with my own Christmas favourites. It may be the least viewed blog post on the Swords Ortho website this year, but quite a few people did ask me for my choice, so I thought I'd list them.

a Christmas selection
And these are a few of my favourite things....
a selection of my favourite Christmas records.

No Fairytales....

  1. Christmas Wrapping (The Waitresses)
  2. Step Into Christmas (Elton John)
  3. Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day (WIzzard)
  4. I Believe in Father Christmas (Greg Lake)
  5. Gaudete ...
