Services & Procedures
At Swords Orthodontics, we offer a full range of orthodontic care for everyone in North County Dublin and beyond. Because we are specialists, we can offer treatment, expertise, and focus that simply aren’t available in general dentistry.
Expertise in All Orthodontic Problems
Some of the situations we regularly treat include:
- Crowded teeth
- Gaps in teeth
- Teeth that are in the wrong position
- Twisted teeth
- Overjetting teeth (teeth that stick out)
- Teeth that don’t meet together properly (including crossbites, abnormal overbites, and open bites)
- Problems with the jaw bones and skeletal structure of the face
Whether you’ve been aware of the problem, or the dentist has pointed out a concern and advised an orthodontic evaluation, we are happy to provide a free examination without any charge to you and recommend a treatment plan. If you agree, we’ll get started!
Orthodontics for All Ages
And we do mean all ages! At Swords Orthodontics, we encourage parents to bring in their child for an orthodontic evaluation by age 7 (or younger if there is a specific problem that you’ve noticed) so we can make sure that everything is developing the way it should. If we do notice something that gives us concern at this age, we have a wide range of options available to us so that we can provide the easiest and most effective treatment possible at the optimal age – which might be then or later.
On the other side of the equation, we also have many patients who are in their 40s and 50s, men and women. As long as your teeth and jaws are healthy, there’s really no age limit for orthodontic care! We offer a number of “invisible braces” options for adults who are concerned about their image, including clear braces, Invisalign, and Incognito. This isn’t just for models and movie stars, but people like teachers, lawyers, or people who work in areas like customer services or management and administration – regular jobs where they are in personal, face-to-face contact with other people.
Why Does Orthodontics Matter?
Most people who come to see us want their teeth to look better, but crooked teeth and misaligned bites are more than just an aesthetic issue. The alignment of your teeth and jaws affects the health of your teeth and gums, and that (according to some recent research) can affect your entire body.
When your teeth are crooked, it’s more difficult to clean them properly, which can lead to tooth decay, dental cavities and the need for dental treatment like fillings, and also gum disease and bad breath. Several studies have linked gum disease to serious health conditions, and we’d prefer that you not have to deal with that.
Abnormal contact between the upper and lower teeth, a “misaligned bite”, puts pressure on teeth in ways that they were never meant to handle. Over time, this can cause erosion, abnormal tooth wear, and even cracking of the teeth. In extreme cases, you may eventually lose teeth, which can lead to a whole new set of problems.
For some people, teeth that don’t meet normally can also challenge the muscles and ligaments that control the movements of the jaws, which sometimes leads to other problems.
