Brace-friendly brunch at Gourmet Food Parlour

When I'm working, I like to eat lunch away from the practice. If I'm having lunch on a Sunday in Swords, then one of many great places to eat is Gourmet Food Parlour, where I was this weekend. It's still pretty close to Swords Orthodontics (they're on North St, we're about 200m away on Main St) and they serve brunch there on a weekend up to 5pm..

Guitar player Gerry Leonard from Clontarf rocks at the Dublin Bowie Festival

Dublin is in the grip of the 2019 David Bowie Festival. Probably Ireland’s biggest annual event coordinated around the cultural effect of one person. Lectures, books, movies, science, photography, cabaret, improvisational comedy, even a children’s art competition, and obviously music, music, music.

Gerry Leonard
"Can Gerry Rock?" was the essential question when Clontarf guitarist Gerry Leonard was asked to join David Bowie's touring band.

I was never a huge David Bowie fan, but he’s always been there. I’m old enough to remember him in the charts – “Boys Keep Swinging” being the first time. Not understanding the possible connotations of this title, I made up ...

Conversations: First week back, January 2019

"Happy New Year!"
"And the same to yourself!"

"I see we haven't seen you since March last year, that's 10 months since you last orthodontic appointment"
"I know, I've been busy."
"You know, you're meant to see us more often than that - if we don't see you regularly the treatment doesn't go as fast as it should."
"I know, I should have seen you earlier."

"Any problems with the braces?"
"Yeah, one of the brackets broke off, so I had to take some of the brace off and put it back on myself."
"You know, you shouldn't really try to do adjustments on the brace yourself."
"I know, it ...

It’s that time of the year again- all the kids go back to school!! If you’re going back to school with braces, here are some tips and reminders to help you keep on track of taking care of your braces and improve your smile.

Eat Braces Friendly Food

When you wear braces, there are certain types of food you’ll need to avoid. These include sticky, chewy and hard foods. Also, drink lots and lots of water! A Dozen Dos and Don'ts - 12 Tips for successful orthodontic retainer wear

12 Do's and Don'ts for successful retainer wear

Here are 12 Tips for Orthodontic Retainer Success (plus a bonus tip, so it's  not just bakers that have 13 in a dozen)

1

DO wear your retainers as your orthodontist directs.

The rest of what follows is what we tell our own patients. At Swords Orthodontics, for most removable retainers, I advise full time wear for the first 3 days and then it’s night time wear after that.

For Ever.

Really.

If you still want straight teeth in 10 years’ time, you’re still wearing a retainer in 10 years’ time.

2

DON’T have your retainer anywhere other than one of these two places:

  1. Your Mouth
  2. Your Retainer Box

Anywhere else and it’s likely to get lost, broken, damaged, stolen, eaten ...

Five Minutes to Save a Life

As we approach Ireland’s National Mouth Cancer Awareness Day on Wednesday, September 17th, I’m going to outline what the disease involves and some of the problems that can arise from mouth cancer. You can find more information on this in my previous blogs, but this is a summary of the important stuff.

Swords Orthodontics is in the middle of a busy street where there are about a dozen people trained and equipped to detect and intercept one of Ireland’s most dreadful diseases, and even though this disease is on the increase few people are aware of it - and how easy it is to get checked out for it when they’re least likely ...
